Arcam DV78 DVD Player: Short Take
The Skinny: The idea with this player was to strip down the bells and whistles and provide Arcam-level CD sound and progressive video for under a thousand bucks. Well, Arcam cleared the bar with a whole dollar to spare. At $999 the DV78 competes with any dedicated CD player at the price and offers outstanding image quality as well. At this point in time the mass-market players have gained by offering digital video outputs and, usually, SACD and/or DVD-Audio playback, and now there are HD players at the same price point, and even lower. But the DV78 makes the grade here for being so superb with CDs. It's the audiophile's choice at this price point.
