Fifth Element Again, But With Feeling

It's no secret at all that longtime DVD demo favorite, Luc Besson's Fifth Element, was released early on Blu-ray in a transfer that was shockingly poor. Sony is essentially admitting it was wrong (excuse me, I think I just saw a pig fly by my window), and is re-releasing Fifth Element on Blu-ray on July 17th and is offering an replacement program for people who bought the original Blu-ray Disc.

According to High-Def Digest, Sony is already getting information from customers on the release. Simply call (800) 860-2878 or email at consumer@sphecustomersupport.sony.com and Sony will contact you later on making the exchange.

The new disc will be AVC-encoded, according to Sony's Don Eklund, and will feature both linear PCM and Dolby TrueHD soundtracks, which frankly seems like a little too much of a good thing. But given the showcase status of this title, this release is certainly being gussied up to knock all of our socks off.

We spend a lot of time complaining when the studios misstep, and haven't we all lamented being jammed up time and again for re-releases of our favorite movies? Well, this time around it looks to me like Sony is making it right and doing the right thing by the people who already threw down for FE.
